My Baby Is 20: Reflecting on What Led to the Design of My First EasyStand
By Tholkes, Alan; New Mobility, Vol. 21, No. 198, pp. 32-35Publication Date: March 2010
Article by the inventor of a commercial line of mobility products describes the process of developing his first wheelchair and stander. A quadriplegic due to spinal cord injury in an automobile accident, the inventor was dissatisfied with his lightweight wheelchair after one of its armrests broke off and set out to design an improved model. With money received from the wheelchair manufacturer as compensation for injuries caused by the armrest breaking, a prototype rigid, lightweight wheelchair was produced. The chair could be made narrower while sitting in it and folded as small as a briefcase with the wheels off. The concept was subsequently sold to an investor, and the company Altimate Medical was founded. The EasyStand standing frame, developed and manufactured by the company a few years later, incorporates a backed seat which lifts the user to a standing position after transfer. In the twenty years since the invention of the EasyStand, Altimate Medical has improved and expanded its product lines.
