Website Evaluation: Directions for Me, a Gift to People Who Can’t Read the Box

By Kendrick, Deborah; Access World, Vol. 11, No. 7
Publication Date: November 2010

Review of a website that provides accessible package information from products found in supermarket and drugstore aisles for shoppers with visual impairments. Directions for Me (http://www.directionsforme.org/), a service of the non-profit organization Horizons for the Blind, provides directions for use, ingredients, and product details for over 300 thousand food, health, beauty, and other products such as home electronics. The site is designed to be 100 percent accessible with text-to-speech, magnification, and Braille output products. The reviewer found the site easy to navigate with links to its various categories of products and a search box for entering a specific product. Each page has 3 primary links: Food, Health and Beauty, and Other. Clicking on one of the links nets a list of alphabetized product category links; for example, clicking on Food results in an alphabetized list ranging from Baby Food to Wine. Selecting Baking will, in addition to yielding baking products, provide recipes and baking directions for some of the products such as cake mixes.
