Haptics Offer the Sensation of Touch Without Touching

Article features an electronically enhanced cane that detects obstructions in the path of its user and warns the person via vibrations. One of several engineering student projects in the field of haptics that were on display at the University of Pennsylvania at the time the article was published, the cane is equipped with a device that projects a cone of ultrasonic waves in front of the user, allowing it to detect obstructions and then warn the person by making the cane vibrate. Engineering students consulted with a blind cane user in the development of the device, the obstacle detecting components of which cost about 40 dollars and are housed in a small box attached to the cane.
