What the Tech?: App Identifies Money for the Blind

By Lattanzio, Vince; NBC Philadelphia,
Publication Date: March 10, 2011

Short video demonstrates a new software application for the Apple iPhone that identifies currency for people with visual impairments. The LookTel Money Reader, when installed on an iPhone, uses the phone's camera to identify currency when the bill is held close to the phone and speaks the denomination, such as “five dollars.” It is not necessary to hold the money or the phone still for the app, which can even identify folded bills, making it convenient to use, for example, when standing in line at the supermarket. At the time the video first aired, the app was available for the iPhone at a cost of 2 dollars but reportedly would be marketed for other so called smartphones in the near future.
