Z-Van Shares Technology That Will Improve the Lives of Deaf Children

Article features a program that disseminates information about assistive technology to deaf communities throughout the United States. New technology geared specifically to the deaf community is demonstrated via the Z-Van, a vehicle which travels the country and is owned and operated by Z Video Relay Service. The Florida based company is run by and for deaf people. The article describes a visit of the Z-Van to the Blossom Montessori School for the Deaf in Clearwater, Florida, where the children are introduced to equipment including (1) video phones that allow conferencing with several people at the same time, (2) video answering machines, (3) pagers that alert a user when a video message arrives, and (4) a phone that allows a deaf person to sign and a hearing person to hear the words in spoken language.
