Project Develops Voting Help for Disabled Vets
By Wang, Kevin; AirForceTimes,Publication Date: July 25, 2012
Article reports on a federally sponsored project called Making Voting More Accessible for Veterans with Disabilities. The project was launched in 2010 by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, the Georgia Tech Research Institute, and the Operation BRAVO Foundation. Interviews with 104 injured veterans were conducted to inform the design process. Accommodation efforts made include making the ballot text more legible and improving existing ballot display technology for voters who have trouble touching the screen. Because many veterans reported having difficulties accessing paper ballots, a web-based procedure is being implemented where voters can request ballots to be sent to them via email. Researchers are also developing an electronic tool that allows the use of devices such as a computer mouse to mark ballots.
