(Verified 04/2009) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. --- The Braille Adventure Series is a series of braille training game programs designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. These game programs are designed for use on the VTPlayer (see separate entry), a tactile electronic game device. The series is structured to encourage children to understand and learn braille. Beginners are guided through the process from pre-braille to advanced skills. Braille concepts are introduced in game form via drilling, repetition, and level progression. Teachers can select individual games or use the complete system. Two game programs are currently available: Braille Hatchery enables the user to build a mental image of each braille letter and to memorize the basic braille code. The action takes place on a braille hatchery farm, where cartons containing six eggs represent the standard six-dot braille matrix. Players have to recognize each braille letter by touch, and then click on the correct sequence of eggs representing the braille code. In the second game, Braille Conveyor, players visit an amusement park where they pick out the correct braille symbols from a moving (and accelerating) conveyor belt. This game emphasizes the rhythmic aspect of braille reading, and teaches players to differentiate similar symbols and distinguish spaces from symbols. The game also increases reading speed as the conveyor speeds up.
