--- DISCONTINUED. (Verified 9/1999) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. ---The BEST Switch Interface, or BSI, is a keyboard modification program that allows persons with physical or cognitive disabilities to connect one to three switches to IBM computers. Commercial or public domain software can be used with the BSI as cause-and-effect and motor training programs. This partial keyboard emulator assigns any key or a string of keys to be activated through 1, 2, or 3 switches; enables a one-handed user to operate the keyboard; and can function as a Shift, ALT, or CTRL key, or as an alarm. COMPONENTS: The BSI package includes a DIN connector which plugs into the serial or parallel port of the computer; the switch interface, a round plastic connector into which the switches are plugged; the interface program, a user-friendly software program which allows the user to define keystrokes for each of the switches, and translates switch presses into keyboard input; several public domain games, which have been pre-configured for use with up to three switches; a menu program, which lets the user access several commercial programs with the BSI; and a user's manual, which describes how to set up and use the BSI. COMPATIBILITY: For use with IBM or 100 percent IBM-compatible computers. Several programs were specifically designed to be used with the BSI, including BEST Faces, Colors and Shapes, R.J. Cooper's Single-Switch Software (See separate entries), and Write-Away (an adapted word processing program).
