Picture of TALKING SIGNS Talking Signs are voice output signs and pedestrian signals designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. Talking Signs transmit voice messages with orientation information through an infrared wireless communications system. The system consists of short audio signals sent by invisible infrared light beams from permanently installed transmitters to a hand-held receiver that decodes the signal and delivers the voice message through its speaker or headset. The signals are directional, and the beam width and distance can be adjusted. The system works effectively in both interior and exterior applications, and may be used wherever landmark identification and wayfinding assistance are needed. The user scans the environment with the hand-held receiver, and as a signal is encountered, the user hears the message. For example, upon entering a lobby, the user might detect "information desk" when pointing the receiver directly ahead, "public telephones" when pointing to the right, and "stairs to the second floor" when pointing to the left. Messages are short and straightforward. The messages repeat, continuously identifying key features in the environment. When the system is placed inside standard pedestrian signals, users who point their receiver in the general direction of a pedestrian signal hear a message that specifies the intersection's location, its block number, the status of its traffic signal (red, yellow or green), and which direction the user is currently facing, allowing the user to direct or redirect his or her steps more precisely.
