Picture of ECHO SMARTPEN The Echo Smartpen is a scanner and digital recorder that records handwritten notes and accompanying audio commentary for people with developmental, learning, cognitive or memory disabilities. The Echo is a functioning pen that uses a high-speed infrared camera to record everything it writes. It also has a microphone embedded in the pen that records lectures or audio notes made by the user to augment the written material. The Echo has an ARM 9 processor, and video and audio recordings are stored in NAND flash memory that is incorporated into the pen. Models of the Echo offer 2 gigabytes (GB), 4 GB and 8 GB of NAND memory. The 2 GB Echo can record over 200 hours of audio; the 4 GB version offers over 400 hours; and the 8 GB version 800 hours. The notes must be written on Livescribe’s dotted paper; a starter notebook is included with the 4 GB and 8 GB versions.The recordings can be transferred to a computer via a micro USB cable (included), and processed using the Livescribe Connect software (included). The Basic version of the software is offered with all models and allows notes to be shared with a variety of applications including Facebook. The Premium version of Livescribe Connect is included with the 4 GB and 8 GB models, and it adds connections to email and Google Docs. Livescribe also provides 500 megabytes (MB) of online storage for recordings. Audio recordings can also be played back using the Echo’s built-in speaker or on headphones that connect through a 3.5 millimeter audio jack at the top of the pen. There is also a 96 x 18 pixel OLED display in the top section of the pen. COMPATABILITY: For use with Apple Macintosh or IBM PC or compatible computers. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS (for Livescribe Connect): Windows XP (with SP3), Windows Vista or Windows 7, or Mac OS X 10.5.5 or later with a 600 megaHertz (MHz) processor (Intel processor required for Mac); 300 megabytes (MB) of free disk space; USB 2.0 port; and Internet access. DIMENSIONS (LxW): 6.22 x .78 inches. POWER: Uses rechargeable lithium battery (included). WEIGHT: 1.3 ounces without cap.
