The e-Talk 8400 is a direct selection and symbolic communicator designed for use by people with communication, learning and speech disabilities. This handheld device resembles a small tablet computer. It features a bright poly-silicon (LTPS) 800 x 600 touch screen that can be read in a variety of indoor and outdoor lighting conditions. The e-Talk 8400 also has a built-in microphone and an internal speaker with variable volume, and there is a sound output port for use with external speaker(s). It uses PCS symbols than can be used singly for one-button cause and effect, in pairs two cell simple choice, or multiple symbols can be associated to create phrases and sentences. This communicator uses the e-Talk 1.5 software with DECtalk speech that facilitates the creation of new pages, variation of the number of buttons on a page, location of specific symbols, and customization of colors and spacing. Clinicians and therapists can also create page sets entirely on a computer and download vocabulary to the user’s eTalk-8400. In addition to the touch screen, the user can utilize any USB input device (including USB keyboards), certain switches or the customizable on-screen keyboard to select cells illustrated by individual or combined symbols, pictures, or text, or by spoken sounds; to spell words; to choose phrases; and to write sentences in order to produce voice output. To connect to other devices, the e-Talk 8400has a USB port; two 3.5-millimeter switch ports; a serial (RS232) port for connection to a PC; and a PCMCIA port for network cards or flash memory cards. The unit uses a Windows CE Embedded operating system. DIMENSIONS (LxWxD): 9.3 x 7.7 x 1.8 inches. The screen is measures 8.4 inches diagonally.
