The Amtel Direct Line System is an inter-office communication system consisting of a minimum of two units that transmit electronic messages by means of power wiring or a two wire local area network. The system was designed for the business community but modified for use by individuals with hearing disabilities. The CDD allows a light (lamp) to become a flashing signal announcing incoming alerts and messages. The flashing speed varies depending on whether an alert or a message is being received. The duration of the flashing is user selectable. DISPLAY: Messages are viewed on a 32 character visual display ($689) on each unit and can be up to 7 lines (224 characters) in length. Display has 4 brightness levels. KEYBOARD: The 44-key keyboard ($749) has dual function keys defining 18 phrases (alerts, replies, and status). "Alerts" announce phone calls and responses. Each unit can store several hundred messages or reminders in memory; has full text editing capabilities; message and reminder forwarding; and multiple language capabilities. In addition, an individual Keyboard or Panel is capable of outputting messages to any standard serial line printer. PRINTER: A printer ($399) is optional and comes in 2 models. One model is MONITOR, which monitors all messages within the system and prints them; the other is STANDALONE, which functions as a message center for up to 10 individuals. DIMENSIONS: Each unit is 10 x 4.5 x 9 inches; the printer is 7.5 x 3.5 x 9.5 inches. WEIGHT: 4 pounds per unit and per printer.

Notes: The Amtel Direct Line System has been successfully installed and employed in two side-by-side residences for non-verbal communication purposes.
