The CapTel telephone is a captioned telephone for people with hearing disabilities. This phone is designed specifically to interact with the CapTel Captioning Service to display a realtime transcript of each conversation on a screen located just above the number key pad. Users who subscribe to the CapTel Captioning Service place each call in the same way as dialing a traditional phone. As the user dials an outgoing call, the phone automatically connects to the Captioning Service. When the other party answers, the CapTel phone user hears everything said as with a traditional call. Behind the scenes, an operator at the CapTel Captioning Service transcribes everything the other party says into written text. The written text appears on the display window built into the CapTel phone. The captions appear almost simultaneously with the spoken word, allowing the CapTel phone users to understand everything that is said by hearing and/or reading it. The telephone does not, by itself, translate spoken words into written captions, and the captioning feature can only be used for calls that go through the CapTel Captioning Service. The phone can also be used as a traditional amplified telephone, without the caption feature. The CapTel telephone requires connection to a standard analog telephone line (or analog port), such as is commonly found in households. It cannot connect to a digital telephone line (as is sometimes found in offices) or to any other non-analog telephone line. The CapTel phone is available in a two-line version that will automatically contact the CapTel Captioning Service for each incoming and outgoing call. The CapTel phone is equipped with a USB port that enables the transcript to be displayed on a computer monitor when used with the CapTel USB software (see separate entry).
Notes: The CapTel Captioning Service is available in 44 States and the District of Columbia. It is not currently available in Alaska, Delaware, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, and South Dakota. ** One free CapTel telephone is available to each active Federal employee who uses the Federal CapTel program. ** Users in an office environment should check with their telephone administrator to make sure an analog port is available. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) users can connect a CapTel phone if the appropriate inline analog filter is installed between the phone jack and the CapTel phone.
