--- DISCONTINUED. (Verified 12/2002) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. --- BrailleMate is a braille notetaker designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This notetaker features a braille keyboard with 8-dot braille cells, two RS-232 serial ports, one Centronix parallel port, a standard earphone connector plug, and a built-in speech synthesizer. The BrailleMate's software includes a word processor, calculator, telephone book, and calendar. WORD PROCESSOR: The word processor supports up to nine placemarkers and block manipulation, and can simultaneously edit two files using a memory card. Cursor movement can be in increments of character, word, sentence, or paragraph. Other text editing features include global search and replace, print and braille formatting, ability to position cursor at top and bottom of files, cut and paste, insert and delete. BACK TRANSLATOR: BrailleMate translates Grade 2 Braille to text for output to a printer and the optional speech synthesizer. KEYBOARD: The 8-dot braille keyboard enables use of the entire ASCII character set and, when coupled with the software Navigator, the braille keyboard can be used to function as a personal computer. Two extended function keys provide access to expanded functions when used in combination with the 8-dot keyboard. The braille cells provide instant tactile feedback when entering and reviewing material, and allow quiet feedback in situations where speech may be intrusive. PHONE/APPOINTMENT BOOK: The phone book features a database for addresses and phone numbers, and provides database functions of sort, search by field, printing of individual records, and cut and past to other BrailleMate functions. The phone book also features a built-in tone dialer for automatic and rapid telephone dialing. The appointment book stores appointments and meeting schedules that can be referenced by date, day, time, or appointment. The system alerts the user to check the appointment book on days with entries. CALCULATOR/CLOCK: The calculator supports floating point, six basic arithmetic functions, memory, and cut and past. The clock provides the current date and time. POWER: Works with input adapters from 9 to 25 volts DC output; the 9-volt adapter (included) allows for standard AC operation and simultaneously charges the internal nickel cadmium (NICAD) batteries. COMPATIBILITY: May be used with IBM PC or compatible computers; functions as an external speech synthesizer for a PC and can be used with any speech access software which supports the Sonix driver; ASCII terminal mode provides on-line interaction with another computer or data service, and supports modem or direct connection; and with a standard VT1000 terminal program, a PC or Apple computer can be used as a visual display for BrailleMate. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: 128K program memory supports all of the device's built-in software. DIMENSIONS: 8.25 x 3.75 x 1.25 inches. WEIGHT: Less than 1 pound.

Notes: BrailleMate is available without speech capabilities outside the US only. ** The back translator is the same as that in TeleSensory's MPRINT (see separate entry).
