Picture of TEACHING TOUCH (MODEL 1-08861-00) Teaching Touch, model 1-08861-00, is a tactile skills training program designed for use by children who are blind or have low vision. This program encourages young children to become active explorers and readers of tactile graphics, using real stories to bring important points to life. Various skills that contribute to exploration and appreciation of tactile graphics are addressed in ways that are enjoyable and motivating for children. These skills include tracking, searching, verbal description, and use of symbols. Section one focuses on understanding the blind child's perspective and how learning through touch may differ from other means of learning. Section two emphasizes building up the child's store of experience with real objects and actions as a foundation for comparative thinking. It includes an explanation of particular skills and their importance to blind students. An appendix discusses specific strategies for teaching older children to read tactile maps. A separate booklet, "Moving On to Pages," introduces the use of exercise sheets to promote tactile tracking, scanning, and comparison. Included are 16 tactile example sheets, with suggestions for making more. OPTIONS: replacement Large Print Manual (model 7-08861-00); optional Braille Manual (model 5-08861-00).
