(Verified 1/2000) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE.--- The AliMed Footdrop Night Splint is an ankle foot orthosis designed to prevent footdrop contracture by supporting the foot in the correct functional alignment, to protect against development of heel pressure sores, and to allow the user to alternate between the supine and sidelying position in bed. The manufacturer suggests this splint would be particularly useful for persons with spinal cord injury, stroke, head trauma, or who are comatose. The Footdrop Night Splint immobilizes only the ankle, leaving the hip joint free to rotate and flex. The foot plate has been set at an angle of slightly less than 90 percent, the middle of the range of motion required for normal gait, to help insure the user's future ability to stand comfortably erect once recuperated. This prefabricated splint is designed to fit up to 80 percent of users without modification, but can be easily customized to accommodate persons with significant edema or with unusually sized calves and malleoli. Modifications to the polyehtylene shell and AliPlast liner can be achieved by heating, trimming, or padding the brace. MATERIALS: The splint consists of a plastic shell, replaceable foam liner, and two padded straps (one over the calf and one across the ankle joint) of Beta Pile II with Velcro type fasteners. Both the shell and the liner can be washed and disinfected. SIZES:Available for both the right and left foot in Infant (for infants up to 18 months old), Junior (for children up to 6 or 7 years old), Medium (10-inch or smaller calf, 9-inch or smaller instep, and 7-inch or smaller metatarsal) Large (10-13 inch calf, 9-12 inch instep, and 7-8.75 inch metatarsal; fits most women), and X-Large (13-inch or larger calf, 12-inch or larger instep, and 8.75-inch and larger metatarsal; fits most men).

Notes: Replacement liners are available for Medium, Large and X-Large splints ($14.95 each).
