Picture of SWING CAPSULE -------- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To design a prototype of a kitchen knife for use by individuals with grasping, fine motor or upper extremity disabilities or arthritis. The designer believes that traditional knives are not suitable for the elderly because the center of mass is located in the rear when people push down. The solution is the Swing Capsule kitchen knife. The handle can be rotated up and over the blade to create a more centered balanced while keeping the users fingers safely away from the knife's edge. The device's handle is made of bio plastic and can be used in the standard, fully extended configuration or adjusted by rotating the handle back and above the dull edge of the knife to account for the center of mass for more power and stability in cutting.
