-------- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To create a prototype of a training toy for children with autism spectrum disorders. Developed by two child specialists at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, Auti is a interactive toy for children with autism over the age of 6 months. It is designed to stimulate their imaginations and teach positive behaviors. Auti is a furry, quadruped toy containing a number of programmable sensors that can detect touch and sound. Auti shuts down in response to negative behaviors, such as hitting or screaming, but it immediately responds positively with movement during friendly interaction, such as stroking or soft speaking. Because autistic children often have difficulty playing with other children due to a lack of understanding of how to properly control their voice and body, Auti is designed to teach positive play behaviors by helping to develop appropriate speaking and touching and collaboration skills. The sensors can be adjusted to respond appropriately to a child's individual characteristics. AUTHOR: Scott Jung. TITLE: Auti: The Training Toy for Autistic Children. WEBSITE: medGadget.
