-------- CUSTOMIZED ADAPTATION --------- PURPOSE: To create a custom adapted arm/leg ergometer for use by an individual with mobility disabilities and who uses a wheelchair. The article outlines a simple adaptation of an ergometer for use by those with lower extremity disabilities. The modification involves using PVC tubing to adapt an existing exercise ergometer. The first step to modify an existing arm/leg ergometer is to remove the seat. PVC tubing is purchased and then cut to construct one meter extension units for each hand pedal using a small saw. The ends of both PVC extension units are then glued to larger circular PVC pipes that can be slipped onto the existing hand pedals. Then handles are constructed on the opposite ends of both extension units by gluing PVC pipes at 90 degree angles. The length of the handles should accommodate an average hand size. The supplies and tools needed for this modification are minimal. The hand and arm range of motion needed to cut and glue the tubing allows most wheelchair users to construct the unit him- or herself with some assistance. Finally, small dumbbells are placed on all four ergometry legs to ensure the stability of the device during use. The device can easily be restored to its original design in order to be available for both upper and lower body exercise. AUTHOR: Linda S. Lamont.
