--- DISCONTINUED. (Verified 1/2009) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. --- Guido is a walking frame and electronic mobility aid designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision and mobility disabilities. This nonfolding wheeled walker provides physical support while using robotic technology and artificial intelligence to enable the user to avoid bstacles and hazards while moving around. The unit works by scanning the environment to identify landmarks, obstacles, openings, and turning points. Its on-board computer selects the clear path closest to the user's goal and communicates landmarks and decision points to the user via voice messages such as "opening left" or "path blocked." A dial allows the user to control the volume. In addition, the device interacts with the user through proprioceptive feedback: when faced with an obstacle, the user can feel the device steering away. Users can choose automatic or manual mode. In automatic mode, the device uses its full capability to avoid obstacles. In manual mode, the user can choose to have the voice feedback but retain full control of the device. The device has bicycle-style handlebars, a single-dial control, and both physical brakes and automatic braking.
