This do-it-yourself simple cup holder for a wheelchair combines the most practical components of each type of holder (hard shell and soft bodied). This new cup holder retains its shape while being used, has an opening wide enough to allow easy placement and removal of a cup, and has enough resilience to survive being regularly smashed into various hard objects. The individual’s cup that is used everyday is measured and the angle needed to hold it was determined and a simple pattern was created. The pattern consists of the bottom of the holder being half-moon shape, with the flat side next to the wheelchair. The sides of the holder come up just far enough to keep the cup from tumbling out, but are low enough so that an individual can get a grip on the cup. A flexible plastic kitchen cutting board was cut into three pieces for the structural support: one half-moon piece for the bottom, another flat piece for the back of the holder, and a longer rectangle to curve from the back piece across the front. The semi-circular design allows for a cup to be held upright and somewhat snugly in the front (where the holder is round), but allows for more space in the back (where the half-moon shape squares off). This gives the cup more wiggle-room without making it unstable, and gives the individual a little more space for his or her hands. Nylon sports material was used for the fabric because it cleans easily and dries quickly. The plastic half-moon shape is encased in a rip-stop by sewing the edges together. The back piece and the front rectangle are pieced together, and then attached a tube made to the fabric-covered half-moon piece. A fold-over braid was used to for quick and easy assembly. Straps at the top and the side keep the cup holder from slipping around. Straps can be attached to go over the armrest or the arm rest can be unscrewed and the straps put under it; thus effectively clamping the cup holder in place.
