Picture of ARMASSIST -------- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To create a prototype of a portable robotic device with matching video game software platform for telerehabilitation for individuals with neuromuscular disabilities such as stroke, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and various others. Researchers in Spain have created ArmAssist, a mobile-based device that connects to the user through an orthotic that then records and measures the movements of the shoulder and elbow. These arm movements are translated to movements in a video game, thereby assisting with the rehabilitation of the upper limbs. The device can be used at home (telerehabilitation) while the treatment team evaluates quantitatively the user’s performance remotely (online) and can ensure the user is performing the exercises correctly. There are two types of proposed patient exercises: evaluation and training. The evaluation exercises are short and should be undertaken every day at the beginning and the end of the training session. The video games train independently the range of motion, force, distance, and of precision. The objective is to motivate the patient to train the arm over a longer period.
