By Grant, Debbie; Singer, George; CSUN Technology and Persons With Disabilities Conference - 2004,Publication Date: 2004
Paper discusses From Research to Practice: The Use of Microcomputer Technology to Enhance Infants’ Lives Project, which was created by the Santa Barbara County Education Office in California and awarded a grant by the Office of Special Education Programs. The project was established to determine the impact of computer use on children with disabilities. Ten software programs were utilized in the project: (1) Baby Time (Shareware) (2) Teach Me to Talk (SoftTouch), (3) Teach Me Phonemics – Initials (SoftTouch), (4) Switch Basics (SoftTouch), (5) Old MacDonald’s Farm (SoftTouch), (6) New Frog and Fly (Simtech), (7) Cause & Effect – Sights & Sounds (Simtech), (8) Switch Kids (Simtech), (9) Making Language Visible (Creative Communicating), and (10) IntelliPics (IntelliTools). The program was also created to help train teachers, assistants, and parents on how to use computers with young children. The authors contend that the project should have a positive impact on the use of assistive technology in elementary educational settings.
