Class is in Session: A Review of the Telex Professor Desktop Audio SystemBy Kendrick, Deborah; Access World, Vol. 8, No. 2
Publication Date: March 2007
Article provides a review of the Professor Desktop Audio System from Telex, which allows the user to listen to CDs, MP3s, or DAISY CDs, which feature digital content that allows audio navigation by page, chapter, section, or bookmark. Users can listen to both standard cassettes and the four-track, half-speed variety from the National Library Service for the Blind and Dyslexic, while the Professor is the only DAISY player with a fully accessible FM radio. The Professor is evaluated in terms of the following features and criteria: (1) physical description, (2) beginning to play, (3) turn your radio on, (4) reading the disk, and (5) playing cassettes. The author did find some minor annoyances with the system, as it can be slow to “power up,” and it generally takes ten to fifteen seconds for the unit to identify the format of a disk once it is inserted. Still, the author contends that the Professor is a unique and versatile audio system that could be very useful for students or professional who utilize audio material in a wide range of formats.
