By Sajka, Janina; Access World, Vol. 4, No. 2, pp. 30-36Publication Date: March 2003
Article provides an overview of Linux, which is a free software operating system. Three different software components that are available with Linux are described: (1) Emacspeak, (2) Speakup, and (3) Britty. Emacspeak is a speech-enabled interface to the Emacs environment. The application can be used to play music, listen to the radio, and read DAISY books. Speakup is the Linux screen reader, which provides speech for all console applications on Linux. Console applications are character-based applications, either executed directly from the command line or with character-based menus. Britty is a Braille terminal application, which supports most refreshable Braille displays.
