The Development of a Motorised Assistive Device for the Removal of Therapeutic Elastic Stockings
By Gelderblom, Gert Jan; Hagedoren, Edith; Soede, Thijs; Assistive Technology - Shaping the Future: AAATE 2003 Conference Proceedings, Vol. 11, No. 1, pp. 606-610Publication Date: 2003
Paper discusses the design of the ORT-O-MATE, which is a motorized device that enables the user to remove their stockings independently. Therapeutic elastic stockings are used in the Netherlands by approximately 150 thousand people to support vascular functioning in their extremities. The user sits opposite the device, which is mounted to a wall at floor level. A cord and a clip button are attached to the stocking at the backside of the leg, and a single-button remote control can be used to activate the motor. The cord is then rolled into the device, which pulls the stocking from the leg in a smooth, unobtrusive manner. Once the stocking has been removed, the procedure can be applied to the other leg.
