With Small Devices, Older New Yorkers Gain Independence and Peace of Mind
By Warren, Mathew R.; New York Times,Publication Date: January 20, 2012
Article describes a funding program that assists senior residents in a New York City retirement community in living independently. Access to an emergency alarm response system, or ERS, is offered to residents of Co-op Village naturally occurring retirement community (NORC) on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Thanks to a grant from the New York Times Neediest Cases Fund, residents pay as little as 15 dollars a month for the service, based on income. The ERS consists of an emergency alert bracelet worn on the wrist, which the subscriber presses in case of an emergency such as a fall, and monitoring service which dispatches an ambulance when alerted.
