This program is included as part of the Apple Macintosh system software (System 7.x, 8.x, and 9.x). EASY ACCESS
Easy Access is a set of keyboard utilities built into the Apple Macintosh operating system that allow the user to modify the operation of the keyboard and mouse for individuals who have limited upper extremity mobility. The utilities are provided with the operating system at no additional cost. Sticky Keys is a feature that allows single-finger operation of the keyboard. With Sticky Keys turned on, the "modifier" keys (such as SHIFT) can be pressed before the key they modify, rather than at the same time. Pressing the modifier key once modifies the next keystroke only; pressing it twice locks it on until it is turned off by being pressed again. Multiple modifier key sequences (like SHIFT-OPTION) can be executed using Sticky Keys. MouseKeys is a feature that allows the keys on the numeric keypad to be used in place of the mouse. Since the Apple PowerBook does not have a built-in numeric keypad, this utility set also includes a Mouse Keys for the PowerBook utility, which is used to emulate the numeric keyboard on the standard PowerBook keyboard. SlowKeys is a utility that enables the computer user to have the keyboard delay a keyboard entry unless the desired key is held down for a user-determined amount of time. The set also includes a text-to-speech utility that allows the computer to read alert messages that appear on the screen; messages can be read in either English or Mexican Spanish. Easy Access is included in operating systems 4.1 and above. COMPATIBILITY: For use on Apple Macintosh and PowerBook computers.

For individuals with upper extremity disabilities or low vision, speech recognition can be used to launch applications as well as to execute application commands instead of typing or mousing. The system will also speak alerts, selected text, and text underneath the mouse using its PlainTalk speech synthesizer program. For users who are deaf or hard of hearing, the operating system makes it possible for the screen to flash to indicate beeping alerts. Users who have have difficulty using the mouse can use the numeric keypad to move the cursor around the screen. The operating system also allows users to navigate menus, the Dock, windows, toolbars, palettes, and other controls via the keyboard. For individuals who have difficulty using a keyboard, the operating system allows modifier keys (command, option, control, shift) to be pressed sequentially instead of simultaneously. The operating system displays key sequences on screen with the Quartz compositor, and can also beep when a modifier key is pressed. OPTIONS: Single-switch and on-screen keyboard software, and command sets to extend command capabilities when using voice recognition software (see separate entries). COMPATIBILITY: For use on Power Mac G3, G4, G4 Cube; iMac; PowerBook G3, G4; iBook; or eMac computers. This operating system does not support the original PowerBook G3 or processor upgrade cards. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: 128 megabytes (MB) of random access memory (RAM); built-in display or display connected to an Apple-supplied video card; and at least 3.0 gigabytes (GB) of available hard drive space. This operating system works with most Canon, HP, and Epson USB inkjet printers; USB digital still cameras that support mass storage, PTP, and Digita; and cameras from Canon, Kodak, and Nikon. However, some devices may need additional driver support from the manufacturer.

On the iPhone and iPad, VoiceOver allows the user to interact directly with the touchscreen by speaking the content of any area of the screen that is touched and providing instructions on how to access the application or content on the screen. Similar to its use on the Mac, VoiceOver has standard gestures that control a wide variety of functions, and the user can program custom gestures. VoiceOver for iOS also supports Bluetooth braille displays. VoiceOver includes built-in voices that speak 36 languages.
