  1. GAMZ PLAYER CD WITH SPEAK TEXT

The GAMZ Player CD with Speak Text is a CD-ROM containing an educational game program (the GAMZ Player) designed to teach reading and spelling skills to students with learning disabilities, and a screen reader program (Speak Text) that is also designed for use by individuals with learning disabilities. The educational game program is based on the Swap and Fix educational card games (see separate entry). It contains software versions of all 35 boxed Swap and Fix card games, plus 14 extra Swap and Fix games featuring more advanced letter strings and word endings. This educational game program has pre-recorded speech and sound effects and optional music. Users can select card backs, backgrounds, fonts, and font colors, control the sound, and print the cards. The program also includes five other game activities: Word Search; Read Hear and Spell; Match The Words; Match the Backs; and Slider Puzzle. The screen reader program speaks selected text in any program, including word processors, help files, e-mail, and Internet pages. It opens in the top left corner of the screen and remains in front of all other windows at all times. Users can choose from 19 voices, but are limited to the number of Narrator voices in Windows 2000. The speaking rate can be varied between 60 and 210 words per minute. Pronunciation of words can be edited with online phoneme usage assistance. Common abbreviations are expanded. COMPATIBILITY: For use with IBM and compatible computers and Apple computers. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: For IBM-compatible computers, Windows 3.x, 95, 98, Me, NT4(SP3), 2000, XP, or later; a multimedia PC with a 50 megahertz (MHz) 486 processor or any Pentium processor; 8 megabytes (MB) random access memory (RAM); 40 MB minimum disk space; CD drive; sound card and speakers; graphics card; and monitor with at least 640 x 480 pixels at 256 colors. For Apple computers, an iMac or G3 or G4 Apple Mac running Virtual PC v3.0. In addition, Speak Text requires a 100 MHz Pentium processor and 32 MB of RAM.

  2. SWAP AND FIX CARD GAMES

Swap and Fix Card Games are reading and spelling skills card games designed for use by students with learning disabilities. These games are suitable for two to four players. There are 28 different Swap games in four sets and seven different Fix games in one set. Each game consists of a pack of 42 word cards, eight Swap or Fix cards, and a word list. There are three, four, five, or six suits (word families or prefix/suffix types) in each pack of cards. The cards are colorful but uncluttered and each suit, or letter string, is a different color. These reading and spelling card games can be played with any helping adult or by a group of students in the classroom. When played with a teacher, the games are excellent for introducing and reinforcing word families and spelling rules. The games are designed to be flexible and the words are carefully selected so that either whole families or individual words can be withdrawn without spoiling the game. The games can thus be tailored to the needs of students. The rules are printed on the back of every game box. Players try to place a card of a matching suit on top of the card placed by the previous player, the objective being to play all cards. To reinforce learning, the player must say the word as it is played or name the letter string when changing suit. The Swap and Fix cards allow players to change the suit. To win, players must be able to read the words and recognize to which word family/prefix/suffix group they belong. The simple rule structure of these games allows less able players to rely purely upon chance, which proviees a leveling factor, while more able players can invent tactical game plans. OPTIONS: Games can be purchased individually or in sets.
