(Verified 2/2005) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE. --- The AlphaTalker II is a direct selection or scanning communicator designed to assist nonverbal individuals and those with speech disabilities to converse. This communication board is designed for those with limited communication needs and may be used as an introductory communication tool, as an evaluation tool, or for persons with short term speech loss. The unit comes standard with 6.5 minutes of standard or 11.5 minutes of extended English digitized speech. Speech is expandable to 37 minutes. The unit comes standard with 125 pre-loaded words and combining icons extends the vocabulary beyond the standard 32 locations. New words can be added by pressing a few buttons and speaking. Built-in icon prediction prompts the next selection to reduce memory load and predictive selection blocks locations where no vocabulary is store to reduce inaccurate activations. Auditory scanning/feedback prompts individuals with visual disabilities as to what location is being activated. Theme keys enable special overlays to be created, enabling children to participate in activity-based learning programs. Other standard features include a 32-location keyguard, Unity software, overlays and transfer sheets, a memory transfer interface for IBM and Macintosh computers, an operator's manual, and a self-study guide. An expanded package also includes BUILLD for Unity (see entry for Unity/128) and a memory module. The unit can be accessed via the keyboard, switch-activated scanning, or an optical headpointer. POWER: Uses a rechargeable battery; the battery charger is included. An optional battery pack is available. OPTIONS: Other languages are available, as are optical headpointers, four- and eight-location operating kits, a remote microphone, a carrying case, memory modules, and a remote switch box .
