(Verified 3/2002) RETAINED IN DATABASE FOR REFERENCE--- DynaVox is a voice output communication board designed for use as an augmentative communication aid by individuals with cerebral palsy, head injury, post stroke, and other neurological disorders affecting the ability to speak. It can also be used in intensive/critical care, as an educational tool for persons with learning disabilities, and with the mentally retarded. Features such as the auditory scan mode and large print screen make the DynaVox accessible by persons with vision disabilities. DISPLAY: 640 x 480 TSTN, liquid crystal display with fluorescent backlight; has "dynamic display" which refers to a method of selecting a message in which the user progressively "zeroes" in on desired intent by selecting from successive menu screens. INPUT METHODS: Touch activated screen allows for keyboards with different sized keys and key layouts; touch panel display can be used with hold time and/or release time, touch enter (activation on entering a key) or touch exit (activation upon release of key); joystick, single and dual switch scanning methods built-in; 7 different scan patterns; adjustable scan speed; variable transition time. SCREEN KEYS: 1 to 60 keys per screen (one key as large as entire screen to keys that are 3/4" sq. in size); keys can contain symbols, letters, numbers, words, phrases, or a combination of a symbol and a written message; 3 sizes of letters and numbers. VOICE OUTPUT: The DynaVox uses DECtalk (TM) text-to-speech technology; choice of nine output voices including male, female, child, and whisper; digitized speech. OTHER OUTPUT: Two RS-232 serial ports for printer, computer access and environmental control. MEMORY: Non-volatile RAM for user vocabulary, symbol and overlay storage: 256KB, expandable to 1MB; DynaCard application card: 512KB, expandable to 4MB; DynaCard (memory cartridge) allows use of different application programs to be used. COUNTER: Keeps track of how many times each key was used; can view usage counts on screen or print them. BATTERY: Rechargeable; 14 hours typical use on full charge; recharge time is 8 hours maximum. DIMENSIONS: 13.2"w x 10.9"h x 3"d. WEIGHT: 11 lbs.
