Around the House: Floor Toilets

By PN: Paraplegia News, Vol. 58, No. 5, p. 55
Publication Date: May 2004

Article describes the Freedom Floor Toilet, which combines an easy way to use mechanical leg-bag release and a self-flushing floor toilet that automatically drains the contents of the bag. The flushing mechanism is self-activated when a wheelchair rolls onto the toilet, while it stops when the chair rolls off. The device features stainless steel construction and utilizes electronic sensors that activate the flushing mechanism. A heavy-duty pump discharges the waste material into a conventional toilet or drain. After the bag has drained, the user maneuvers away from the floor toilet, and the flushing stops. The drain area is hinged and fastened with two screws to allow access for cleaning the draining bowl.
