Using Vehicular Communication to Support Older Drivers at Road Intersections

Paper discusses the feasibility of utilizing a vehicle communication system to support drivers who are older in road intersections, which is the most common site for accidents among this population. The ECAM system is discussed, which is a formal framework that provides a reasoning engine for studying the time evolution of traffic accidents. The system investigates the relationships between events that occur in traffic and their possible consequences, and is able to model changes that take place in hazardous traffic situations. Ultimately, the system can use this data to determine how accidents can be avoided. A technological evaluation of the ECAM system is discussed in detail. The system was developed by researchers at the Department of Computer and Information Science at Linkoping University in Sweden.
