MEville to WEville Introduced at CSUN

Article discusses MEville to WEville, which is an academic curriculum designed to improve the early literacy and communication skills of elementary school students with cognitive disabilities. The research-based curriculum integrates reading, writing, speaking, augmentative and alternative communication, and listening skills for students who have demonstrated difficulties in learning to read and write through traditional methods. The curriculum consists of three units, the first of which focuses on building a sense of self through lessons such as Who I Am, How I Feel, and What I Like. Unit two is titled My Family, and focuses on relationship building. The third unit is called My School, and examines how students interact with one another. Activities created with BoardMaker Symbols are also included, as are data collection tools teachers can utilize to track students’ progress. All units incorporate the Action Dictionary, which is an assistive technology (AT) guide designed to help educators utilize a range of accommodations and AT.
