Mass. To Use Microsoft Office in ODF Plan
By LaMonica, Martin; CNET News,Publication Date: August 2006
Article focuses on Massachusetts’ decision to use OpenDocument as the default document format in 2007, as disability rights groups criticized the move to switch from the more assistive technology-friendly Microsoft Office format. Massachusetts’ Information Technology (IT) Division reviewed the criticisms, and agreed to adjust the dates of the OpenDocument conversion if the state could not find adequate accessibility products to complement the format. The IT Division has investigated plug-ins and translator components that can be added to Microsoft Office in order to allow it to read and write to OpenDocument format, which is a potential solution to the problem.
