Practical Considerations in the Use of Technology to Facilitate the Inclusion of Students with Severe Disabilities

By Carey, Ph.D., Doris M.; Sale, Ed.D. Paul; School of Education at University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, CO; Technology and Disability, Vol. 3, No 2
(Pages: 77-86) Publication Date: May 1994

This study of 28 teachers of students with severe disabilities examined student use of technology in the classroom and barriers to effective use. The following barriers were identified: lack of a reliable source of power, lack of mobility of technologies, cost of and access to technologies, the difficulty of maintaining systems in good repair, and a lack of curricular outcomes which consistently include the use of technology. The authors put forward their suggestions for overcoming or minimizing these difficulties.
