DEFIE: An Intelligent and Flexible Integrated Environment for Disabled and Elderly People

This article describes a project whose aim is the development of a generic model for an intelligent system, which using current and future multimedia, will allow a friendly and safe interaction between the elderly and disabled and the "smart home" of the future with its many assistive devices. The system will allow the integration of different types input/output control devices, and will feature telemaintenance, remote system monitoring to allow software updating, remote user support and remote environment monitoring. Block diagrams illustrate the proposed system architecture.
