Effective Participation of Persons Using AAC in a Mixed Group of Users and Non-Users of AAC

By Panchura, Carly A.; Stone, Vathsala I.; Usiak, Douglas J.; Proceedings of the RESNA 25th International Conference, Vol. 22, No. 1, pp. 93-95
Publication Date: June/July 2002

Paper describes and compares two methods for collecting data from augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) users to ensure full participation in discussions between users and non-users of AAC. Specifically, face-to-face (FTF) methods are compared with Computer-Mediated-Communication (CMC), which is an alternative strategy for collecting input from a group of users of AAC. In CMC, the computer mediates the communication process between the people involved and facilitates the transfer of information and preservation of information exchanged between participants in remote locations. The commonly used AAC devices were the Liberator, the Dynavox, and the LightWriter. While both processes provided essentially the same information, the computer-mediated-communication process took longer and did not provide the real-time exchange provided by the face-to-face method.
