Functional, Yet Fashionable

By Wilber, Tammy; Sports 'N Spokes, Vol. 35, No. 2, pp. 34-35
Publication Date: March 2009

Article describes a wheelchair user’s role of input into the choice of mobility device after sustaining spinal cord injury. The author, who was injured as a result of an accident in her sports car, describes how she was prescribed a bulky and generic, albeit functional, wheelchair following her hospital discharge, likening it to her first car, a used clunker with a velvet interior she named the Blue Bomber. In subsequent efforts to acquire a more lightweight, stylish chair, she went through several upgrades until receiving the model she now rides in, with features such as light-up casters, a fancy wheel design, and a sleek frame. She finds it useful in her work as the coordinator of Ms. Wheelchair Washington and as a member of the Light Motion wheelchair dance company.
