Bottom Pantry Cupboard With Rotating Shelves Insert

Description of a pantry modification that makes items on its shelves accessible to an individual in a wheelchair or with limited mobility. The Bottom Pantry Cupboard With Rotating Shelves Insert mitigates the problem of accessibility by rotating the items inside the cupboard and bringing them to the user rather than the user having to reach for them. It was designed to slip inside a standard residential bottom cabinet with only a few modifications. The insert has two compartments: a top one with 4 storage shelves and a bottom one housing a motor and electrical components. The shelves are suspended beneath a cross rod, allowing the shelves to rotate freely as both the shelves and the cross rod rotate around a center axis. Shelves are rotated by activating the drive system in the lower compartment via a push button switch which engages the system when pushed and stops the motor when released. The switch and motor are connected to a conventional 120 Volt 3-prong outlet via a fuse. The pantry modification was designed by engineering students at the State University of New York at Buffalo at a total cost of 170 dollars.
