Picture of G-NAVI -------- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To design a prototype of a GPS navigation and hands-free voice control system to be used to steer a guide dog to a selected location by individuals who are blind or have low vision. The G-Navi combines GPS navigation system with a voice input control and a guide dog harness with vibrating-calibration technology to assist in steering a guide dog to any waypoint the user selects. The G-Navi includes a headset into which the user speaks the location to which he or she would like to go. The voice control system of the G-Navi headset incorporates a vibrational sensor to indicate directional instructions to the user. While the G-Navi harness provides directions to the guide dog, this secondary indicator ensures that the user can tell if the dog is following the G-Navi’s guidance directions. The headset with the vibration sensor fits around the back of the neck and incorporates a small microphone to active the voice input control system. The user must wear the G-Navi headset and place the G-Navi harness on the guide dog using a Velcro and snap buckle. The harness features a solar panel for constant charging and a visual notice that the guide dog is working. The user starts the G-Navi system by pushing the first braille button longer than three seconds. Simultaneously, both sides of the user headset will vibrate three times for three seconds each signalling that the device is now ready for use. To feed new information into the G-Navi that is not already bookmarked, the user can input information through the voice input control system of the user headset. The G-Navi also features Bluetooth technology that allows users to connect to their personal electronic devices (e.g., PDA, computer or smart phone). Additionally, the bookmark feature allows users to program favorite locations. The device also incorporates an emergency call function based on RFID and wireless technologies.
