This article describes the work of a project designed to establish, operate, and evaluate the effectiveness of an independent living center-based assistive technology service. The main aims of the service are to: provide affordable repair of assistive equipment and devices; teach preventive maintenance practices; refer consumers to providers or vendors who can assist in obtaining new equipment; counsel consumers about sources of sponsorship for equipment repair or acquisition. The main focus of the services so far has been on wheelchair repair.
