Sports can provide physical activity and recreation that yield psychological and physical benefits. According to Roy J. Shephard's study "Benefits of Sport and Physical Activity for the Disabled: Implications for the Individual and for Society," potential benefits include improvement of mood, reduction of anxiety and depression, increased self-esteem, improved perceived health, and long-term reduced risk of many chronic diseases.
The number of people with disabilities who engage in sports and other physical activities has increased dramatically. National and international sports associations have formed, and organized competitions for persons with disabilities are now commonplace for many different sports. Whether for competition, recreation, or exercise, the sports equipment market is overflowing with products to get fans off the sidelines and into the sports arena.
This ABLEDATA fact sheet presents general information on types of aquatic sports, recreation, and exercise products listed in the ABLEDATA database. Sports equipment of any kind is designed with user safety in mind, but it must be fitted and employed properly. Questions on the type or model of equipment that will be fun and safe should be directed to the product manufacturer or a sports organization, prosthetist, or physical, occupational or recreational therapist.
Swimming and other water activities are used in rehabilitation and physical
therapy to promote good muscle tone, lung capacity, flexibility, and overall
fitness without causing undue pressure on joints or bones.
Aquatic activity can be fun and relaxing, and learning to float or swim can
lead to participation in other aquatic sports. For advanced swimmers, there
are local, national, and international competitions. See the listing of organizations
at the end of this fact sheet for more information about organizations that
sponsor competitive swimming.
Flotation devices are designed to keep either a person's entire body or specific parts of the body afloat. Most flotation aids are made of vinyl-coated soft flotation foam with adjustable straps to attach around arms, legs, the torso, the head, or the neck. Sizes are usually based on the user's weight. Flotation devices are useful for persons with some head and neck control and to help compensate for uneven weight distribution. In addition to helping a person maintain a horizontal floating position, some models will maintain vertical positions in the water for walking/gait exercises and for games such as water polo.
Swimming aids take a variety of forms, including rings, harnesses, platforms, belts, and bars. Platforms generally allow free movement of the head, arms, and legs while providing buoyancy to the swimmer. Harnesses may or may not have head and neck supports, and are designed to maintain the body in a usual swim position. Flotation bars consist of flotation rings or balls at either end of a plastic bar which the swimmer can grab for kicking exercises, or place under the thighs or arms in a resting position.
For swimmers with amputation of one or more limbs, there are terminal devices that attach to the prosthesis to aid in swimming. These devices take the place of the hand by providing resistance during the swimming stroke.
A pool lift transfers people with mobility disabilities into a swimming pool. Models vary according to the hoisting and lowering mechanism (hydraulic, drive, or geared lifting mechanisms), whether a lift is portable or permanent, whether it is self- or attendant-operated, and whether the model is geared towards institutional or residential use. Models are available for deck-level pools, above-ground pools, or both. Maximum weight capacity varies from 300 to 400 pounds. Transfer seats may be sling or chair types, most of which have belt or safety strap options, or body supports that lift under the arms while providing support to a person's upper body and thighs. Some models are available with head supports, chest supports, or adjustable leg supports.
Other pool access equipment includes ramps for amphibious wheelchair entry into the water, and ramps and steps with non-slip surfaces and handrails to support individuals who are ambulatory but have disabilities affecting balance. Some pool stairs allow wheelchair users with sufficient upper body strength to descend from a transfer bench or chair by easing down each step.
In addition, removable parallel bars can serve as aids to walking in a pool. Some ramps also function as underwater parallel bars. Movable swimming pool floors, operated by hydraulic lifts, and underwater platforms are another option for making swimming pools accessible to persons with disabilities.
Adaptive swim wear is available for children and adults who want to participate in water sports or just visit the beach or lounge around the pool. Swim wear includes buoyant swim vests; clothing to insulate the body against loss of body heat; clothing that can be put on or taken off with snap or Velcro fasteners or full-length side zippers; and ear muffs to prevent water from entering the ear during exercise or play.
Aquatic wheelchairs include pool wheelchairs for use around swimming pools and beach wheelchairs for use on sandy beaches. Both types are constructed from non-corrosive materials. Some pool wheelchairs are submersible, allowing a wheelchair user to enter a pool on a ramp, and there are chairs of both types that are capable of floating in water. Pool wheelchairs operate manually, but beach wheelchairs are available in both manual and powered versions. Beach wheelchairs have extra-wide wheels, sometimes called balloon wheels, which enable them to move over sand. Wheel kits are available to allow regular wheelchairs to be converted to beach wheelchairs by adding balloon wheels.
Sailboats, dinghies, kayaks, and canoes are available with a variety of adaptive features to increase safety, provide physical support, and enable users with disabilities to control the boat.
Safety: Adaptive boats are typically designed with an inherently stable hull shape or extra ballast to minimize the risk of capsizing. Seating may be designed to increase stability further by lowering the user's center of gravity.
Seating and physical support: To enable a person with physical disabilities to sit in the boat, benches may be replaced with sling seats, and foot supports may be provided.
Controls: To accommodate persons with limited mobility or upper extremity disabilities, adaptive sailboats may have sail control lines designed for one hand use and/or operation from a single seated position. Adaptive rudder controls include joystick steering.
In addition to adaptive boats that are designed to meet the needs of people with disabilities, there are also systems for adapting standard boats. These include a custom-configured elevating deck to provide dock-to-deck wheelchair access for a yacht or other boat, and a rowing system that enables a rower to row with two limbs in any combination (two arms, two legs, or an arm and a leg).
Some adaptive boats are designed for use by one individual with a disability. Others are designed for use by two or more people, allowing a person with severe physical disabilities to be accompanied by a personal attendant or a person with visual impairments to be accompanied by a sighted navigator.
Getting into a boat from a wheelchair may be facilitated by a mobile lift. To provide deck-to-deck wheelchair access for a yacht or boat, an elevating deck can be installed on either the boat or a dock. Decks are available custom designed in size and shape to fit a specific boat or dock.
Sailing and rowing races, regattas, and other boating competitions for people with disabilities are now held regularly around the world. Many of the organizations that sponsor these events also offer programs that teach sailing and boating skills to beginners. Water skis that enable the user to sit while water skiing are available for use by individuals with disabilities such as leg amputations, cerebral palsy, spinal bifida, or spinal cord injury. The skis are equipped with body and leg supports to help the user sit in place.
Fishing is another popular aquatic recreational activity. Many devices are available to help make fishing easier for individuals with physical disabilities. These include devices to aid in cutting and tying fishing line and devices to aid in holding a fishing rod. For people with upper extremity amputation, there are terminal devices that allow a fishing rod to be attached to the end of a prosthetic arm.
In addition to their purely recreational use, swimming aids and flotation devices can be used for aquatic therapy and exercise, which are often recommended for people with disabilities such as arthritis and stroke. In addition to swimming and flotation aids, other aquatic exercise equipment includes devices for resistance exercise in the pool, such as aquatic barbells, boots, and gloves. Several products enable individuals to float upright in water while jogging. Exercise videos, DVDs, and audio CDs are available that present aquatic exercise programs suitable for older adults or younger individuals with physical disabilities.

The Water Skiers with Disabilities Association (WSDA) is an official sport division
of USA Water Ski, which is recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee and the
