The Phonak Roger Pen is a radio aid that helps individuals who are hard of hearing or deaf by amplifying sound around the individual. The Roger Pen is a discreet wearable device that transmits audio directly to the user's hearing aids or a receiver worn around the user's neck. It can be worn by a presenter in a work setting to amplify the volume of the presentation. The device can also be placed in the middle of a table in a social setting or business lunch to help the user hear what is said while canceling out background noise. This device also allows for multiple pens to be in use at the same time so the user can keep up with many different conversations. It has an audio delay of less than 25 milliseconds and uses 2.4 GHz to connect the pens and the receivers.
The Roger Pen features three modes: conference, interview, and lanyard. Conference mode is used when the pen is flat on a desk or table. It has an accelerometer so the microphone knows where it is in space so when it is laying flat it will automatically go into conference mode. If the noise level increases above 70 decibels the user will need to point the pen toward who is talking but if the noise level is below 70 decibels then pen can sit passively on the table. In interview mode the user points the pen at the person who is speaking. In a quiet environment the pen can be uses up to 10 feet away. In a noisy environment that drops to 3 feet. In lanyard microphone mode, the pen can be worn around the user's neck. This is used when the user wants to hear only one person through the pen during presentations. In this setting the pen must be within 8 inches of the wearers mouth.
